The most popular stretch is the Indus River from Phey to Nimmu (Grade II-III, 14 km, beginner-friendly) ending at the spectacular Indus-Zanskar confluence. For experienced rafters, the Zanskar River offers Grade IV-V rapids through dramatic gorges. The Zanskar Gorge multi-day expedition (Grade V, 5-7 days from Padum to Nimmu) is one of the most challenging and scenic river expeditions in Asia.

Chadar Trek (Frozen River)

trekking
Very Challenging / Extreme

Walk on the frozen Zanskar River — one of the world's most extreme treks

The Chadar Trek is one of the most unique and challenging treks on Earth — a 62 km walk on the frozen surface of the Zanskar River in the dead of winter. When temperatures drop to -25°C to -35°C, the river freezes into a sheet of ice (chadar means "blanket" in Hindi), creating a natural highway through the otherwise impassable Zanskar Gorge. Trekkers walk on ice, camp in caves, and cross through some of the most dramatic canyon landscapes in the Himalayas. The trek has become increasingly popular but remains genuinely extreme — it requires excellent fitness, mental toughness, and proper preparation.

Season

January to February

Duration

7–9 days

Cost

₹25,000–45,000

Tips & Safety (6)
Requires excellent physical fitness — train for 3 months before
Temperatures drop to -25°C to -35°C at night
Book with a reputable operator — ice conditions change rapidly
Carry 4-season sleeping bag rated to -40°C
Trek is regulated by local authorities — permits required
Ice conditions are unpredictable — trek may be cancelled or rerouted

Markha Valley Trek

trekking
Moderate to Challenging

Ladakh's most popular multi-day trek through ancient villages and high passes

The Markha Valley Trek is the classic Ladakh trekking experience — a 6–8 day route through the Hemis National Park crossing two passes above 5,000m (Ganda La 4,900m and Kongmaru La 5,200m). The trek passes through traditional Ladakhi villages with whitewashed houses, ancient Buddhist stupas, fields of barley, and offers views of Stok Kangri (6,153m) and Kang Yatse (6,400m). Homestays in villages provide authentic cultural immersion. The trail is well-marked and moderately challenging, making it ideal for experienced trekkers who want to explore Ladakh beyond the roads.

Season

Late June to mid-September

Duration

6–8 days

Cost

₹15,000–25,000

Tips & Safety (5)
Acclimatize in Leh for 2–3 days before starting
Homestays available in villages — carry sleeping bag as backup
Two high passes above 5,000m — be prepared for altitude effects
Hire a local guide for navigation and cultural context
Carry water purification — river water may not be safe

Stok Kangri Climb

mountaineering
Challenging (non-technical)

The most accessible 6,000m peak in the world — Ladakh's trekking peak

Stok Kangri (6,153m / 20,187 ft) is one of the highest trekking peaks in India and considered the most accessible 6,000m summit in the world. The climb does not require technical mountaineering skills but demands excellent fitness, high-altitude acclimatization, and determination. The standard route takes 4–5 days from Stok village (accessible from Leh) with a summit push on day 4. Summit day starts at 1–2 AM and involves crossing a glacier. On a clear summit day, you can see K2, Karakoram, and the entire Ladakh range.

Season

Late June to mid-September

Duration

4–5 days

Cost

₹20,000–35,000

Tips & Safety (5)
Must acclimatize 3+ days in Leh and do a warm-up trek first
Summit day: 12–15 hours round trip starting at 1–2 AM
Carry crampons, gaiters, and trekking poles for the glacier

Bactrian Camel Safari

safari
Easy (suitable for all ages)

Ride rare double-humped Bactrian camels across high-altitude sand dunes

The Hunder sand dunes in Nubra Valley offer one of Ladakh's most surreal experiences — riding rare double-humped Bactrian camels across white sand dunes at 3,048 metres, with the snow-capped Karakoram range as backdrop. These camels are descendants of pack animals that once carried goods along the ancient Silk Route between India and Central Asia. Only about 200 Bactrian camels remain in the region. The 30–45 minute rides take you across the dunes, offering incredible photo opportunities. It's particularly magical at sunset.

Season

June to September

Duration

30–45 minutes

Cost

₹300–500 per person

Tips & Safety (4)
Go in late afternoon for golden light and sunset photos
Camels are gentle but tall — dismount carefully
Carry sunscreen and hat — sand reflects UV strongly
Part of Nubra Valley trip — combine with Diskit Monastery
🚴

Mountain Biking

cycling
Moderate to Extreme

Pedal through the world's highest motorable roads and remote Ladakhi villages

Ladakh is a mountain biker's paradise, offering some of the highest and most scenic cycling routes in the world. The Manali-Leh Highway is the ultimate multi-day cycling challenge, crossing five passes above 4,000m. For shorter rides, the Leh to Khardung La route (39 km, all uphill to 5,359m) is a legendary single-day challenge. The route from Leh to Hemis along the Indus Valley offers a gentler ride through monasteries and villages. Mountain bikes can be rented in Leh, and several operators offer supported tours with backup vehicles.

Season

June to September

Duration

1 day to 14 days

Cost

₹1,000/day

Tips & Safety (4)
Acclimatize thoroughly — cycling at altitude is much harder than at sea level
Carry spares, tools, and high-energy food
The Manali-Leh route takes 10–14 days by bicycle
Hydrate aggressively — dry air and altitude cause rapid dehydration

Camping at Pangong & Tso Moriri

camping
Easy (luxury camps) to Moderate (wild camping)

Sleep under the stars beside Ladakh's legendary high-altitude lakes

Camping beside Pangong Tso or Tso Moriri is a quintessential Ladakh experience. At Pangong, numerous camps along the lakeshore offer Swiss-style luxury tents and basic camping options. At Tso Moriri, camping is more wild and remote — with fewer facilities but a more pristine experience. At these altitudes (4,350m–4,522m), the night sky is spectacular — Ladakh has virtually zero light pollution, making it one of the best stargazing destinations in the world. Waking up to a sunrise over a high-altitude lake is a life-defining moment.

Season

June to September

Duration

1–2 nights

Cost

₹3,000–8,000/night

Tips & Safety (5)
Temperatures drop to -5°C to -10°C at night even in summer — carry warm layers
Altitude sickness is common — acclimatize in Leh first
Book Pangong camps in advance during peak season (July–August)
Tso Moriri: very limited facilities — carry food and supplies
Stargazing is incredible — bring a camera with long exposure capability
⚠️

Altitude Sickness Warning

All adventure activities in Ladakh are at extreme altitudes (3,500m–6,153m). Acclimatize for at least 2 full days in Leh before any strenuous activity. Carry Diamox (consult doctor), drink 3-4 litres of water daily, and descend immediately if symptoms worsen.Read our complete safety guide →
